SABIC 318CNJ LLDPE Resin

SABIC LLDPE 318CNJ is a Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) grade specifically engineered for wire and cable applications.

Physical Properties

  • Density: Determined in accordance with ASTM D1505, the material’s density is measured as 0.918 grams per cubic centimeter(0.0332 lb/in³).
  • Melt Flow: As per ASTM D1238 standards, the melt flow rate is 2.8 grams per 10 minutes under a load of 2.16 kilograms (4.76 lb) at 190 degrees Celsius (374°F).

Polymer Properties:

  • Base Material: Linear Low Density Polyethylene
  • Modification Features:
    • TNPP – free with an optimized antioxidant formulation.
    • Devoid of slip and antiblock additives.
    • Requires additional substances for meeting ageing and jacketing needs.

Applications:

  • Wire and Cable Insulation and Jacketing
SABIC® LLDPE 318CNJ is predominantly used in the wire and cable industry for insulation and jacketing due to its excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties.
    • Specific Use Cases
      • Power Cables: Used as an insulation layer in low- and medium-voltage power cables, where its high dielectric strength and flexibility prevent electrical breakdowns and facilitate installation in confined spaces.
      • Communication Cables: Applied in jacketing for coaxial and fiber optic cables, providing mechanical protection and environmental resistance while maintaining flexibility for routing.
      • Control and Instrumentation Cables: Utilized for insulation and jacketing, offering durability and resistance to chemical and thermal stressors in industrial settings.
    • Processing Considerations
SABIC® LLDPE 318CNJ is processed via extrusion, with recommended conditions ensuring optimal performance:
      • Melt Temperature: Typically ranges between 180–220°C, depending on equipment and cable specifications.
      • Additive Incorporation: Compounding with Carbon Black (for UV resistance) or Cu-inhibitors is performed during processing to tailor the material for specific ageing and environmental requirements.
  • Potential Non-Wire Uses
While primarily designed for wire and cable, the properties of SABIC® LLDPE 318CNJ suggest potential suitability for other applications, provided appropriate modifications are made:
      • Films and Coatings: With additional stabilizers, it could be used in agricultural films or protective coatings, leveraging its tensile strength and flexibility.
      • Injection-Molded Parts: Its mechanical properties may support low-stress molded components, though this is less common due to its wire and cable focus.
