Physical Properties

  • Specific Gravity: Measured in accordance with ASTM D792, the specific gravity is 1.03 g/cc (1.03 g/cc).
  • Density: Determined using injection-molded samples per ISO 1183 standards, the density is 1.03 g/cc (0.0372 lb/in³).
  • Viscosity: At a shear rate of 100 1/s and temperature of 240 °C (464 °F), the melt viscosity is 1.55e+6 cP (ASTM D3825).
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow:SABIC method gives 0.0060–0.0080 cm/cm at 3.20 mm thickness, slightly tighter than EX39 for precise profiles.
  • Melt Flow: As per ISO 1133 standards, at a temperature of 220 °C (428 °F) under a load of 10.0 kg (22.0 lb), the melt flow rate is 4.0 g/10 min.

Polymer Properties:

  • Base Material: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
  • Modification Features:
    • High impact strength balanced with good extrudability for sheet and profile applications.
    • Versatile performance for both rigid and semi-rigid molded parts.

Applications:

The CYCOLAC™ EX58 and EX58F resins are primarily used in applications requiring high impact strength, dimensional stability, and processability. Below are the primary application areas, supported by their material properties:

  1. Automotive Components
    • CYCOLAC™ EX58 and EX58F are widely used in automotive applications, particularly for interior and exterior components produced via sheet extrusion or blow molding. Their high impact resistance and dimensional stability make them ideal for:
      • Interior trims: Below-the-beltline components, such as door panels and dashboard substrates, benefit from the resins’ excellent adhesion to fabric and leather, as well as their molded-in color capabilities. These properties ensure aesthetic appeal and durability.
      • Exterior parts: Components like spoilers and body panels leverage the resins’ toughness and low coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE), which ensures stability across temperature variations.
    • Supporting Data:
      • Impact Resistance: CYCOLAC™ EX58 exhibits high impact strength, suitable for automotive parts subjected to mechanical stress.
      • CLTE: Low CLTE ensures minimal deformation under thermal cycling, critical for automotive exterior applications.
      • Processing: Excellent flow properties allow for complex geometries in blow-molded or extruded automotive parts.
  2. Consumer Goods
    • The resins are used in consumer products requiring durability and aesthetic appeal, such as:
      • Luggage and protective cases: The high impact resistance and toughness of EX58 and EX58F make them ideal for luggage shells and protective equipment casings produced via blow molding.
      • Appliance components: Housings for small appliances benefit from the resins’ ability to maintain structural integrity and surface quality.
    • Supporting Data:
      • Aesthetics: CYCOLAC™ resins provide outstanding surface finish and colorability, enabling vibrant and durable consumer products.
      • Toughness: High impact resistance ensures durability in drop-prone applications like luggage.
  3. Food Contact Applications (EX58F)
    • CYCOLAC™ EX58F is FDA food contact compliant, making it suitable for applications in:
      • Food packaging: Blow-molded containers and trays for food storage benefit from the resin’s compliance with FDA standards and its ability to maintain structural integrity.
      • Kitchenware components: Items like food processing equipment parts leverage the resin’s toughness and chemical resistance.
    • Supporting Data:
      • FDA Compliance: EX58F meets FDA food contact requirements, ensuring safety for food-related applications.
      • Chemical Resistance: The resin resists degradation from common food-related chemicals, enhancing longevity.
  4. Industrial Applications
    • CYCOLAC™ EX58 and EX58F are used in industrial applications requiring robust materials, such as:
      • Industrial enclosures: The resins’ toughness and dimensional stability make them suitable for protective housings in industrial equipment.
      • Pipes and fittings: Blow-molded or extruded components benefit from the resins’ high impact strength and resistance to environmental stress.
    • Supporting Data:
      • Mechanical Properties: High tensile strength and impact resistance ensure reliability in industrial environments.
      • Dimensional Stability: Maintains shape and performance under mechanical and thermal stress.
  5. Medical and Healthcare (Limited Use)
    • While not specifically designed for medical applications (unlike CYCOLAC™ HMG47MD), EX58 and EX58F can be used in non-critical medical device housings where high impact resistance and aesthetics are required, provided they meet relevant regulatory standards.
    • Supporting Data:
      • Biocompatibility: While EX58F is FDA-compliant for food contact, specific grades like HMG47MD are recommended for medical applications requiring ISO 10993 compliance.
