DUPONT DELRIN 500AF POM Resin
DUPONT Delrin 500AF is a POM by DuPont, with 20% Teflon fiber for low wear and friction, suitable for automotive, industrial, and aerospace uses.
Physical Properties
- Density: Measured by the ISO 1183 standard, the 1.53 g/cc (0.0553 lb/in³) density, increased by Teflon® fiber filling, affects product weight and performance.
- Melt Density: At 215 °C, the 1.28 g/cc (0.0462 lb/in³) melt density is important for melt – processing and heat management during molding.
- Water Absorption: Absorbing 0.25 % in 86400 seconds and 1.0 % at 2.00 mm thickness (Sim. to ISO 62), it affects product performance in wet conditions.
- Moisture Absorption: At 2.00 mm thickness, the 0.200 % moisture absorption influences the electrical and mechanical properties over time.
- Linear Mold Shrinkage: Measured by ISO 294 – 4 and 2577, it is 0.020 cm/cm in the flow direction and 0.014 cm/cm transversely, crucial for mold design accuracy.
- Melt Flow: Measured by ISO 1133 at 190 °C under a 2.16 kg load, with a melt flow rate of 5.0 g/10 min, it indicates relatively lower flowability compared to some grades.
Polymer Properties:
- Base Material: Polyoxymethylene (POM)
- Modification Features:
- Incorporation of 20% Teflon® fiber, enhancing wear resistance significantly.
- Exhibits low friction against steel, itself, and other plastics, reducing energy loss in moving parts.
- Medium viscosity provides a good balance for processing, enabling efficient molding.
Applications:
The combination of extremely low friction and high wear resistance makes Delrin 500AF a leading material for a variety of self-lubricating and low-maintenance applications.
- Bearing Housings and Bushings: Ideal for producing self-lubricating bearings and bushings that operate in high-wear environments.
- Gears and Cams: Used for precision gears, cams, and other moving parts that require low friction and high durability, especially in systems that are difficult to lubricate.
- Sliding Components: Suitable for slide plates, wear strips, and sliding mechanisms in machinery, conveyors, and consumer appliances.
- Industrial Components: Employed in pump parts, valves, and other components in fluid handling systems where low friction is critical.
Processing Guidelines
Delrin 500AF is optimized for injection molding. Proper drying is crucial to ensure optimal processing and part quality.
- Drying: While not always required, pre-drying at 80°C for 2-4 hours is recommended, especially for long-term storage or high humidity conditions.
- Melt Temperature: 190-210°C
- Mold Temperature: 80-100°C
- Note: Due to the PTFE filler, screw and barrel wear may be slightly higher than with unfilled grades.
