DUPONT DELRIN 500T POM Resin

DUPONT Delrin 500T is a medium-viscosity, toughened homopolymer polyoxymethylene (POM) from DuPont.

Physical Properties

  • Density: Measured per ISO 1183, the material’s density is 1.38 g/cc (0.0499 lb/in³), specifying mass per unit volume for basic characterization.
  • Melt Density: At 205°C (401°F), the melt density is 1.18 g/cc (0.0426 lb/in³), reflecting fluid state mass-volume properties.
  • Water Absorption: After 24 hours immersion (sim. ISO 62), it’s 0.30%; at 2.00 mm thickness, 0.82%, indicating moisture uptake variation with conditions.
  • Moisture Absorption: At 2.00 mm thickness (sim. ISO 62), moisture absorption is 0.210%, showing lower uptake compared to water immersion.
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow: By ISO 294-4/2577, flow-direction shrinkage is 0.015 cm/cm (0.015 in/in), critical for dimensional accuracy in molding.
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage, Transverse: Per ISO 294-4/2577, transverse shrinkage is 0.016 cm/cm (0.016 in/in), highlighting slight directional contraction differences.
  • Melt Flow: Volumetric rate is 10 cm³/10min (ISO 1133); mass rate is 12 g/10min under 2.16 kg/190°C, indicating processability for injection molding.

Polymer Properties:

  1. Base Material: Polyoxymethylene (POM)
  2. Key Features & Characteristics:
    • Superior Impact Resistance: The “T” designation indicates a toughened grade.
    • High Mechanical Strength: Despite its enhanced toughness, it maintains high tensile and flexural strength, providing a robust and rigid structure for durable, long-lasting parts.
    • Low Friction and Wear: The material has a naturally low coefficient of friction and excellent wear resistance, making it an ideal choice for moving parts that slide or rotate against each other without external lubrication.
    • Dimensional Stability: With very low moisture absorption, parts maintain their precise dimensions over time, ensuring reliable performance in various environmental conditions.

Applications:

The combination of superior impact resistance, high strength, and wear properties makes Delrin 500T a top choice for demanding, safety-critical, and long-life applications where parts may be exposed to high-energy impacts.

  • Automotive Components: Ideal for under-the-hood parts and interior components that need to withstand impacts, such as seat belt mechanisms, gearshift levers, and fuel caps.
  • Industrial Components: Used for safety components, conveyor chain links, and power tool casings that require high durability and resistance to accidental drops or impacts.
  • Consumer Goods and Toys: Suitable for robust parts in appliances, toys, and sports equipment that see frequent use and are subject to rough handling and impacts.
  • Pipes and Fittings: Can be used in fittings and connectors where there is a risk of impact or stress.

Processing Guidelines

Delrin 500T is optimized for injection molding and extrusion. Proper drying is crucial to ensure optimal processing and part quality.

  • Drying: While not always required, pre-drying at 80°C for 2-4 hours is recommended, especially for long-term storage or high humidity conditions.
  • Melt Temperature: 190-210°C
  • Mold Temperature: 80-100°C
