CELANESE CELCON M140 POM Resin
Celanese Celcon M140 is a moderately high – flow acetal copolymer for injection molding by Celanese.
Physical Properties
- Specific Gravity: Measured per ASTM D792, the specific gravity is 1.41 g/cc, indicating density relative to water for material characterization.
- Density: As per ISO 1183, the density is 1.41 g/cc (0.0509 lb/in³); compound density is 1.20 g/cc (0.0434 lb/in³) for component use.
- Moisture Absorption: At 23°C/50%RH per ISO 62, moisture absorption is 0.200%, showing low water uptake for humid conditions.
- Water Absorption at Saturation: Per ISO 62, saturation water absorption is 0.75%, critical for assessing durability and waterproofing.
- Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow: ISO 294-4 gives 0.018 cm/cm; ASTM D955 shows 0.022 cm/cm, indicating standard-based variability.
- Linear Mold Shrinkage, Transverse: ISO 294-4 measures 0.017 cm/cm; ASTM D955 reports 0.018 cm/cm, highlighting directional differences.
- Melt Flow: Per ISO 1133 at 190°C (374°F)/2.16 kg, melt flow rate is 12 g/10 min, indicating injection molding processability.
Polymer Properties:
- Base Material: Acetal Copolymer (Polyoxymethylene – POM)
- Key Features:
- High Toughness and Strength: This material offers excellent mechanical properties, making it suitable for durable parts that must withstand significant stress, impact, and fatigue.
- High Viscosity: The higher viscosity of M140 is ideal for extrusion processes, as it prevents melt fracture and allows for the production of thick-walled profiles, sheets, and pipes with consistent dimensions.
- Excellent Chemical Resistance: It offers superb resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including fuels, oils, and common solvents, which is critical for industrial and automotive applications.
- Low Friction and Wear: The material has a naturally low coefficient of friction, making it an ideal choice for parts that slide or rotate against each other without the need for external lubrication.
- Dimensional Stability: With low moisture absorption, parts maintain their precise dimensions over time, ensuring reliable performance in varying environmental conditions.
Applications:
The high viscosity, toughness, and chemical resistance of Celcon M140 make it a leading material for a variety of extruded and blow-molded applications.
- Extruded Profiles and Sheets: Ideal for producing high-strength profiles, rods, and sheets used in various industrial and structural applications.
- Pipes and Fittings: Suitable for hot and cold water pipes, pipe fittings, and industrial fluid transfer systems due to its chemical resistance and long-term durability.
- Fuel and Fluid Tanks: Used for blow-molding small to medium-sized fuel tanks and fluid reservoirs in automotive and industrial equipment.
- Cable Ties and Wire Insulation: Its high strength and good elongation make it a reliable material for durable cable ties and wire jacketing.
Processing Guidelines
Celcon M140 is optimized for extrusion and blow molding processes. Proper drying is crucial to ensure optimal processing and part quality.
- Drying: Although POM has very low moisture absorption, it’s recommended to dry the material at 80°C for 3 hours to remove any surface moisture.
- Melt Temperature: 190-210°C
- Die/Mold Temperature: 60-90°C
