SABIC LEXAN 104 PC Resin
SABIC LEXAN 104 is a polycarbonate (PC) manufactured by SABIC, with a balanced set of mechanical and chemical – resistant properties.
Physical Properties
- Specific Gravity: Measured per ASTM D792, the specific gravity is 1.20 g/cc (1.20 g/cc) with consistent results across two test entries.
- Density: As per ASTM D792, the density is 1.19 g/cc (0.0430 lb/in³) determined by the specified testing method.
- Water Absorption: After 24 hours per ASTM D570, water absorption is 0.15% (0.15%) reflecting moisture uptake under immersion.
- Moisture Absorption at Equilibrium: At equilibrium (ASTM D570), moisture absorption is 0.35%; at 100°C (212°F), it increases to 0.58% per the standard.
- Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow: By SABIC method for 3.20 mm (0.126 in) thickness, linear shrinkage (flow) is 0.0050–0.0070 cm/cm (0.0050–0.0070 in/in).
- Melt Flow: Per ASTM D1238, melt flow rate is 7.0 g/10 min under 1.20 kg (2.65 lb) load at 300°C (572°F) for processability evaluation.
Polymer Properties:
- Base Material: Polycarbonate (PC)
- Modification Features:
- Balanced strength and toughness for varied uses.
- Resistant to certain chemicals and solvents.
- Easily processable via injection molding.
Applications:
Given these properties, LEXAN™ 104 is primarily used in the following applications:
- Automotive Lighting and Glazing: Its UV stability, clarity, and impact resistance make it a prime candidate for headlamp lenses, sunroofs, and other transparent automotive components.
- Building and Construction: It’s used for glazing, domed skylights, and protective barriers where high impact resistance is required to prevent breakage.
- Industrial and Safety Equipment: The resin is used to produce safety shields, machine guards, and other protective components that must withstand harsh environments and potential impacts.
- Electronic and Appliance Housings: Its toughness and dimensional stability make it suitable for durable enclosures for electronics and appliances.
