DUPONT DELRIN 500TL POM Resin

DUPONT Delrin 500TL is a Teflon® – lubricated POM by DuPont, offering low wear and friction for automotive, industrial, electrical, and office equipment applications.

Physical Properties

  • Density: Measured by the ISO 1183 standard, it is 1.43 g/cc (0.0517 lb/in³), a basic property for material quantity calculations.
  • Water Absorption: At 2.00 mm thickness, it is 0.90 % (Sim. to ISO 62), which may impact product performance in humid environments.
  • Moisture Absorption: At 2.00 mm thickness, it is 0.170 % (Sim. to ISO 62), potentially affecting the material’s long – term stability.
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage: In the flow direction, it is 0.018 cm/cm; transversely, it is 0.017 cm/cm as per ISO 294 – 4 and 2577, crucial for mold design.
  • Melt Flow: At 190 °C under a 2.16 kg load, it is 12 g/10 min (ISO 1133). Also, at 190 °C under a 2.16 kg load, it is 14 g/10 min (ISO 1133), showing its flowability during molding.

Polymer Properties:

  1. Base Material: Polyoxymethylene (POM)
  2. Key Features & Characteristics:
    • Internal Lubrication: The “TL” designation stands for “Teflon Lubricated,” but it’s generally a proprietary lubricant blend (often PTFE) that gives the material a very low coefficient of friction and excellent wear properties.
    • Superior Wear Resistance: The internal lubricant drastically enhances the material’s wear properties, allowing parts to have a long service life even under high loads and continuous motion.
    • Excellent Mechanical Strength: Despite the additive, this grade maintains high tensile and flexural strength, providing a strong and rigid structure for durable parts.
    • Good Processability: As a medium-viscosity grade, it offers a good balance of flow and strength, making it easier to process than higher-viscosity grades while still providing excellent mechanical performance.

Applications:

The combination of low friction, high wear resistance, and excellent mechanical properties makes Delrin 500TL a leading material for a variety of self-lubricating and low-maintenance applications.

  • Bearing Housings and Bushings: Ideal for producing self-lubricating bearings and bushings that operate in high-wear environments.
  • Gears and Cams: Used for precision gears, cams, and other moving parts that require low friction and high durability, especially in systems that are difficult to lubricate.
  • Sliding Components: Suitable for slide plates, wear strips, and sliding mechanisms in machinery, conveyors, and consumer appliances.
  • Industrial Components: Employed in pump parts, valves, and other components in fluid handling systems where low friction is critical.

Processing Guidelines

Delrin 500TL is optimized for injection molding and extrusion. Proper drying is crucial to ensure optimal processing and part quality.

  • Drying: While not always required, pre-drying at 80°C for 2-4 hours is recommended, especially for long-term storage or high humidity conditions.
  • Melt Temperature: 190-210°C
  • Mold Temperature: 80-100°C
  • Note: The internal lubricant may cause mold release to be more difficult in some cases, requiring adjustments to the process.
