Chevron Phillips Marlex 5104 LDPE Resin

Chevron Phillips Marlex® 5104 is a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) homopolymer produced by Chevron Phillips Chemical.

Physical Properties

  • Density: Tested per ASTM D1505, the density is 0.924 g/cc (0.0334 lb/in³), providing impact resistance in blow molded applications like containers.
  • Melt Flow: As per ASTM D1238, at 190 °C (374 °F) under 2.16 kg (4.76 lb), the melt flow rate is 1.3 g/10 min, supporting controlled flow in slow-speed blow molding processes.

Polymer Properties:

  • Base Material: Autoclave LDPE Homopolymer
  • Modification Features:
    • Engineered for blow molding with good impact resistance for durable products.
    • Offers stability in high-pressure molding processes for complex shapes.

Applications:

Marlex® 5104 is specifically tailored for applications that demand flexibility and durability. Its processing characteristics and final product properties make it ideal for the following uses:

  • Blow Molded Products: This is the primary application for Marlex® 5104. The resin’s good melt strength and flexibility allow it to be processed into various containers.
    • Squeeze Bottles: The resin’s excellent flexibility is perfect for bottles that need to be squeezed to dispense their contents, such as ketchup or mustard bottles.
    • Pharmaceutical Bottles: It is used for bottles in the pharmaceutical industry that require a combination of good clarity and impact resistance.
    • Flexible Toys: The material’s good impact resistance and overall flexibility make it a suitable choice for manufacturing resilient and safe toys.
  • Extruded Products: Beyond blow molding, Marlex® 5104 is also used in extrusion applications.
    • Wood-Plastic Composites: It can be blended with wood fibers to create composites, where the polymer acts as a binder, improving the durability and flexibility of the final product.
    • Blending: It’s often used as a blending component to enhance the flexibility or improve the friction values of other plastics, particularly in film or sheet applications.

Regulatory Compliance

Marlex® 5104 is compliant with key industry standards, including:

  • ASTM D4976 – PE 113
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.2,
    • which applies to food contact applications, specifically for use conditions B through H as per Table 2 of 21 CFR 176.170(c).
    • This compliance makes it suitable for packaging food and beverages.

These technical properties and certifications underscore its reliability and versatility for various commercial applications.
