Physical Properties
- Specific Gravity: Measured by ASTM D792, the specific gravity of NatureWorks 6201D is 1.24 g/cc, which impacts material handling in fiber – making processes.
- Melt Density: Determined by ASTM D1238 at 230 °C, the melt density is 1.08 g/cc, playing a role in extrusion and fiber – spinning operations.
- Viscosity Measurement: Using the CD Internal Viscotek Method, its relative viscosity is 3.1, influencing resin flow during fiber production.
- Melt Flow: Based on ASTM D1238, at 210 °C and 2.16 kg load, the melt flow is 15 – 30 g/10 min for smooth extrusion in fiber manufacturing.
Polymer Properties:
- Base Material: PLA (Polylactide)
- Key Features & Characteristics:
- Excellent Flexibility and Toughness: Engineered to be much more pliable than typical PLA, with significantly higher elongation at break, making it ideal for films that require durability and resistance to tearing.
- Good Transparency: Produces clear films and parts, which is essential for transparent packaging and retail applications.
- Outstanding Printability: Its surface properties allow for excellent ink adhesion, making it easy to print on for branding and graphics.
- Bio-based and Compostable: As with all Ingeo PLA resins, it is derived from renewable resources and is industrially compostable, providing a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics.
Applications:
The unique combination of flexibility and toughness makes NatureWorks 6201D suitable for a variety of flexible packaging products that require a sustainable profile.
- Film Packaging: Ideal for producing clear films for food, retail, and industrial packaging where flexibility and tear resistance are important.
- Twist Films: Its flexibility makes it a strong candidate for producing twist-wrap films for candies and other products.
- Lamination Films: Used as a layer in multi-layer laminates to provide a clear, tough, and bio-based barrier.
- Overwrap Films: Suitable for overwrapping various products due to its clarity and ability to form a tight, protective seal.
Processing Guidelines
NatureWorks 6201D is optimized for blown film extrusion and other film-making processes. Proper drying is crucial to prevent hydrolysis and ensure optimal product quality.
- Recommended Processing Temperature: 170°C – 190°C
- Drying: The resin should be dried to a moisture content of <250 ppm before processing. Recommended drying conditions are 4 hours at 40°C.
