SABIC LEXAN FR 505RU PC Resin
SABIC LEXAN FR 505RU is a 10% glass fiber-filled polycarbonate (PC) polymer manufactured by SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation).
Physical Properties
- Specific Gravity: Measured according to ASTM D792, the specific gravity is 1.26 g/cc (1.26 g/cc), reflecting the material’s density relative to water.
- Density: Determined by ISO 1183, the density is 1.26 g/cc (0.0455 lb/in³), providing a measure of mass per unit volume for the material.
- Water Absorption: At 23°C under saturated conditions (ISO 62), water absorption is 0.30%, indicating moisture uptake when fully immersed.
- Moisture Absorption: At 23°C and 50% relative humidity (ISO 62), moisture absorption is 0.150%, reflecting equilibrium moisture content in ambient conditions.
- Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow: Using the SABIC method for 3.20 mm (0.126 in) thickness, linear shrinkage (flow direction) is 0.0040–0.0060 cm/cm (0.0040–0.0060 in/in).
- Melt Flow: Per ISO 1133, melt flow is 7.0 g/10 min under 1.20 kg (2.65 lb) at 300°C (572°F); ASTM D1238 reports 8.0 g/10 min under the same conditions.

Applications:
The primary use of LEXAN™ FR 505RU is in applications that require UL-rated flame retardancy and durability.
Its non-halogenated formulation makes it a preferred choice for companies aiming to meet modern environmental and safety regulations. Its main applications include:
- Electrical and Electronic Components: This is the most critical area of application for FR 505RU. The material’s UL 94 V0 rating at thin gauges makes it suitable for sensitive and safety-critical parts.
- Electrical Switch Housings: It provides a safe, durable enclosure for electrical switches and relays.
- Power Tool Casings: The high impact strength, combined with flame retardancy, is perfect for casings of power tools that are subject to rough handling and potential heat exposure.
- Digital Display Enclosures: It is used for the housings of digital displays and other electronic devices where fire safety is a key design consideration.
- Electrical Connectors: Its electrical insulation properties and flame retardancy make it suitable for various connectors.
- Appliance Housings: The material’s balanced properties are well-suited for durable and safe housings of household appliances.
- Vacuum Cleaner Housings: It offers the required toughness to resist impacts and the necessary flame retardancy for safety.
- Microwave Oven Front Panels: The resin can be used for panels and casings in appliances that generate heat.
- Automotive Components: The combination of heat resistance and flame retardancy makes it valuable for certain automotive parts.
- Under-the-hood Components: It can be used for parts near the engine or other high-temperature areas where fire safety is a concern.
