SABIC LEXAN FR1723 PC Resin

SABIC LEXAN™ FR1723 is a special-purpose, flame-retardant polycarbonate (PC) resin produced by SABIC.

Physical Properties

  • Specific Gravity: Tested per ASTM D792, the material’s specific gravity is 1.20 g/cc, indicating its density.
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow: By the SABIC method for 3.20 mm (0.126 in) thickness, the flow – direction shrinkage is 0.0050 – 0.0070 cm/cm.
  • Melt Flow: Following ASTM D1238, at 300 °C (572 °F) with a 1.20 kg (2.65 lb) load, the melt flow rate is 25 g/10 min.

Polymer Properties:

  • Base Material: Polycarbonate (PC)
  • Modification Features:
    • High flow property for efficient injection molding process.
    • UV stabilized to prevent degradation from sunlight exposure.
    • Incorporates mold release agent for smooth part ejection.
    • Comes in limited transparent tint options.

Applications:

The primary use of LEXAN™ FR1723 is in demanding electrical, electronics, and automotive applications where strict fire safety standards, low material thickness, and high performance are all required. Its key applications include:

  • Electrical and Electronic Housings: The material’s ability to achieve a UL 94 V0 rating at a thin thickness makes it an ideal choice for compact electronic devices.
    • Laptop Housings: Provides a strong, lightweight, and fire-safe enclosure for laptops and other portable electronics.
    • Mobile Device Enclosures: Used for creating durable and safe cases for phones, tablets, and other small electronic gadgets.
    • Printer Housings: The resin’s properties allow it to be used for complex, thin-walled parts in printers and other office equipment.
  • Automotive Components: This grade is used for interior and under-the-hood components that need to be both lightweight and flame-retardant.
    • Automotive Interior Parts: It can be used for display bezels, trim pieces, or other parts that are required to meet strict automotive safety standards.
    • Under-the-hood Components: Its heat resistance and flame retardancy make it suitable for parts in close proximity to the engine where fire risk is a concern.
  • Industrial and Consumer Goods: The combination of toughness and fire safety makes it versatile for a variety of other applications.
    • Power Tool Casings: Provides a durable, impact-resistant, and flame-retardant housing for power tools.
    • Appliance Housings: Used for enclosures of small appliances that require both durability and fire safety.
