Regulatory Compliance

FDA Approved for Food Contact

ExxonMobil™ HD 6704.18 is suitable for food contact applications under specific conditions.

FDA Compliance Details:

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation 21 CFR 177.1520 (Olefin polymers), paragraph (c)3.1a
  • May be used for articles or components of articles intended for food contact

Usage Restrictions:

  • For contact with fatty food types III, IV-A, V, VII-A, and IX (as described in 21 CFR 176.170(c)), the finished article must have a volume of at least 2 U.S. gallons (7.6 liters)
  • The finished article may contact food only under Conditions of Use D through G, at temperatures not exceeding 150°F (66°C)
  • Manufacturers of final food-contact articles are responsible for ensuring that their products comply with all applicable regulations for the intended end-use

Processing Guidelines

ExxonMobil™ HD 6704.18 is primarily processed via injection molding. The following are general starting recommendations and should be optimized for specific molds and machinery.

Temperature Settings

Melt Temperature: 200 - 240°C (392 - 464°F)
Mold Temperature: 20 - 60°C (68 - 140°F)
Drying Temperature: 70 - 80°C (158 - 176°F)

Processing Conditions

Drying: Generally not required if stored in sealed, original packaging. If moisture is a concern, drying for 2-3 hours is recommended.
Injection Pressure: Moderate injection pressure is typically sufficient.
Holding Pressure: Approximately 50-70% of injection pressure to minimize warpage and sink marks.

Pressure Settings

Back Pressure: 50 - 150 psi
Low back pressure ensures consistent screw recovery and melt homogeneity.

Processing Notes

• Higher mold temperature can improve surface finish but may extend cycle times
• Optimize settings for specific molds and machinery
• Conduct process trials for best results

Safety and Handling

Important Safety Information

  • A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for ExxonMobil high-density polyethylene grades is available and should be consulted before use
  • Follow standard safety practices for processing thermoplastics
  • Spilled pellets can create a slipping hazard - clean up immediately

Processing Safety

  • Adequate ventilation is required in processing areas
  • Remove fumes that may be generated at melt temperatures
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Follow facility safety protocols
