Applications:

  1. Extrusion for Pipes and Profiles
    • DURACON® M25-44 is primarily used for extrusion applications due to its high viscosity, which ensures uniform flow and structural integrity in extruded products. It is commonly employed in:
      • Pipes and Tubing: Used in fluid transport systems, particularly for closed-profile designs like tubes, which are easier to extrude due to reduced post-crystallization shrinkage. The material’s chemical resistance makes it suitable for conveying oils, fuels, and other liquids. The WK2001 version of M25-44 has a WRAS listing for potable water applications up to 85°C, ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards.
      • Profiles: Applied in structural profiles for industrial and construction uses. The high viscosity minimizes voids and sink marks, improving surface quality and dimensional stability. However, open-profile designs may face challenges due to shrinkage during crystallization, requiring careful design considerations.
    • Data Evidence:
      • The MFR of 2.5 g/10 min supports its suitability for extrusion, providing better control over flow compared to lower-viscosity grades like M90-44 (MFR 9.0 g/10 min).
      • Dimensional stability is enhanced by its crystalline structure, with a typical mold shrinkage of 1.8–2.2% (ISO 294-4), critical for maintaining profile accuracy.
  2. Automotive Components
    • DURACON® M25-44 is widely used in automotive applications, particularly for safety and fuel system components, due to its mechanical strength, low friction, and chemical resistance. Key applications include:
      • Fuel System Components: Fuel pump housings, fuel lines, and connectors benefit from the material’s resistance to gasoline and diesel, maintaining integrity under prolonged exposure.
      • Safety Equipment: Door locks, latches, and seatbelt locking mechanisms leverage the material’s high tensile strength (62 MPa) and impact resistance, ensuring reliability under stress.
      • Gears and Bearings: The self-lubricating properties (friction coefficient ~0.2 against steel) reduce wear in moving parts, extending component lifespan in transmission systems and actuators.
    • Data Evidence:
      • Impact strength (Charpy, unnotched) is approximately 200 kJ/m² (ISO 179-1), suitable for components subjected to dynamic loads.
      • Chemical resistance tests show minimal degradation when exposed to automotive fluids, supporting its use in fuel systems.
  3. Industrial Machinery
    • The material’s mechanical properties and wear resistance make it ideal for replacing metal components in machinery, reducing weight and maintenance needs. Applications include:
      • Gears and Screws: High stiffness (flexural modulus ~2,500 MPa) and low friction enable DURACON® M25-44 to replace steel in gears and screws, reducing noise and wear.
      • Bearings and Bushings: The self-lubricating nature minimizes the need for external lubricants, enhancing efficiency in high-load environments.
    • Data Evidence:
      • Wear tests indicate a specific wear rate of approximately 1–2 mm³/Nm under dry sliding conditions, significantly lower than many other thermoplastics.
      • The material’s fatigue resistance supports its use in cyclic loading applications, with a fatigue strength of ~30 MPa at 10^6 cycles.
  4. Consumer Goods
    • DURACON® M25-44 is used in everyday household products requiring durability and smooth operation. Examples include:
      • Zippers: The material’s low friction and high strength ensure smooth operation and longevity in clothing and luggage zippers.
      • Toothbrush Components: Its chemical resistance and moldability allow for precise, durable parts in personal care products.
    • Data Evidence:
      • The material’s surface hardness (Rockwell M scale ~80) ensures resistance to abrasion in high-contact applications like zippers.
      • Moldability is enhanced by its high viscosity, allowing intricate designs with minimal defects, critical for small consumer goods components.
  5. Thick-Walled Injection Molded Parts
    • Due to its high viscosity, DURACON® M25-44 is suitable for injection molding thick-walled parts, where lower-viscosity grades may lead to voids or sink marks. Applications include:
      • Housings and Covers: Used in electrical and industrial equipment housings, providing structural integrity and thermal stability.
      • Structural Components: Employed in parts requiring high stiffness and dimensional accuracy, such as brackets and supports.
    • Data Evidence:
      • The material’s low mold shrinkage (1.8–2.2%) and high viscosity reduce defects in thick sections, as confirmed by injection molding studies.
      • Thermal stability (heat deflection temperature ~90°C at 1.8 MPa) ensures performance in moderately elevated temperatures.

Conclusion

  • DURACON® M25-44 POM is a high-performance material with a wide range of applications in automotive, industrial, consumer goods, and extrusion processes.
  • Its high viscosity, mechanical strength, low friction, and chemical resistance make it an excellent choice for demanding applications.
  • Supported by a global market share of nearly 19% (Fuji Keizai, 2025), it remains a leading POM grade for replacing metal components and enabling innovative designs.
