Chi Mei PA-797 ABS Resin

POLYLAC® PA-797, manufactured by Chi Mei Corporation, is a general-purpose acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin designed for injection molding.

Physical Properties

  • Density: Determined by ISO 1183, the density measures 1.05 g/cc (0.0379 lb/in³), a key property for material mass and volume calculations.
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage: Per ISO 294-4, linear shrinkage ranges 0.0040–0.0070 cm/cm (0.0040–0.0070 in/in), vital for precise mold design and part dimensions.
  • Melt Flow: Under ISO 1133 (Melt Volume Rate), it’s 9.2 g/10 min at 220 °C (428 °F)/10.0 kg (22.0 lb), indicating processability under specified conditions.

Polymer Properties:

  • Base Material: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
  • Modification Features:
    • Excellent chemical resistance, safeguarding against a wide range of household and industrial chemicals.
    • High impact resistance, ensuring parts can withstand accidental knocks and drops without cracking.
    • Good dimensional stability, allowing for precise and consistent part production.
    • Superior processing ability, enabling easy fabrication via injection molding for complex shapes.
    • High – quality appearance, making it suitable for products where aesthetics are important.

Applications:

  • Kitchen and Home Appliances: For refrigerator door handles, dishwasher racks, ensuring chemical and impact resistance in daily use.
  • Electronics: Used in the casings of printers, scanners, and desktop computers, protecting internal components from chemical spills and accidental impacts.
  • Automotive: For interior door trim panels and console covers, offering aesthetic appeal with durability against impacts.

Processing Advantages

POLYLAC® PA-797’s processing characteristics enhance its suitability for these applications:

  • Injection Molding Compatibility: Processed at melt temperatures of 220–250°C on standard injection-molding machines, ensuring smooth plasticating.
  • Demolding Ease: Favorable surface slip properties allow draft angles of 0.5–1°, facilitating production of complex moldings.
  • Surface Quality: High gloss achieved at mold temperatures of 60–80°C, ideal for visible components.
  • Recycling Potential: Regrind can be reused if free from contamination, supporting sustainability.

Limitations

  • UV Sensitivity: ABS is prone to yellowing and brittleness under prolonged UV exposure, making it unsuitable for unpainted exterior applications.
  • Chemical Resistance: Offers moderate resistance but may require coatings for exposure to harsh chemicals like acids or alcohols.
  • Material Compatibility: Incompatible with most thermoplastics (e.g., polyolefins, polyamides) in the melt, leading to delamination if mixed.
  • Non-Food-Grade: Not typically certified for direct food contact, limiting its use in food-related applications.
