BASF Ultraform S 2320 003 LEV AT POM Resin

BASF Ultraform S 2320 003 LEV AT is a high-performance, free-flowing Polyoxymethylene (POM) copolymer, also known as acetal copolymer.

It is specifically engineered for injection molding processes. The grade designation provides key information about its characteristics:

  • S: A standard grade with good flowability.
  • LEV: Stands for “Low Emission Vehicle,” indicating that this material is designed to meet the stringent low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emission requirements for automotive interiors.
  • AT: Identifies products manufactured at BASF’s facility in Korea, often associated with specific performance characteristics like anti-friction properties.

This grade combines the inherent strengths of the Ultraform® family—high strength, rigidity, and dimensional stability—with specialized features for demanding applications.

Physical Properties

  • Density: Measured in line with ISO 1183, the density of the material is 1.41 g/cc (0.0509 lb/in³).
  • Water Absorption: According to ISO 62, at equilibrium with 50% relative humidity, the water absorption is 0.20%. It shows the amount of water the material takes in under normal humidity conditions.
  • Water Absorption at Saturation: Based on ISO 62, the water absorption at saturation is 0.90%. This indicates the maximum amount of water the material can absorb when fully saturated.
  • Maximum Moisture Content: The maximum moisture content is 0.15. It is a critical limit to ensure the material’s quality and performance during processing and usage.
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow: Measured following ISO 294 – 4, the linear mold shrinkage in the flow direction is 0.021 cm/cm (0.021 in/in).
  • Linear Mold Shrinkage, Transverse: As per ISO 294 – 4, the linear mold shrinkage in the transverse direction is 0.021 cm/cm (0.021 in/in).
  • Melt Flow: Tested according to ISO 1133, at 190 °C (374 °F) under a 2.16 kg (4.76 lb) load, the melt flow rate is 11 g/10 min. This melt flow rate impacts the material’s processability during injection molding.

Polymer Properties:

  • Base Material: Polyoxymethylene (POM)
  • Modification Features:
    • Free – flowing for smooth injection molding.
    • Rapidly solidifies to shorten production cycles.
    • Reduces emissions, suitable for strict environmental needs.

Applications:

  1. Primary Application: Automotive Industry
    • The combination of low emissions, anti-friction properties, and high mechanical strength makes Ultraform® S 2320 003 LEV AT ideal for a wide range of automotive interior components.
      • Seating Systems: Used for seat adjustment mechanisms, levers, gear drives for lumbar support, and headrest guides. The low-friction nature ensures smooth, silent operation.
      • Door and Lock Systems: Components like door lock housings, latches, and window regulator parts benefit from its durability and dimensional stability.
      • Dashboard and Cockpit: Used for kinematic parts in air vents, glove box latches, and other small mechanical assemblies where low emissions are crucial.
      • Fasteners and Clips: Its resilience and strength make it an excellent material for various clips, clasps, and fastening elements that need to be durable and reliable over the vehicle’s lifetime.
  2. Secondary Application: Food Contact
    • Data-Supported: The official product description explicitly states it is “Suitable for food contact applications.”
    • Applications: This opens up its use in manufacturing components for kitchen appliances, food processing machinery, or any parts that require high mechanical performance and may come into direct contact with food. Examples include gears in a food processor, components in coffee machines, or moving parts in conveyor systems.
  3. Other Industrial Applications Due to its excellent all-around engineering properties, it can also be used in:
    • Precision Engineering: Small gears, bearings, and sliding elements in office equipment or household appliances.
    • Consumer Goods: Functional parts in sporting goods, toys, or high-end mechanical devices requiring smooth movement.
