SABIC LEXAN VR2220 PC Resin
SABIC LEXAN™ VR2220 is a high-performance polycarbonate (PC) resin that is specifically engineered for enhanced chemical resistance to a wide range of cleaners and disinfectants.
Physical Properties
- Specific Gravity: Tested per ASTM D792, the material’s specific gravity is 1.20 g/cc, indicating its density relative to water.
- Density: In line with ISO 1183, the density measures 1.20 g/cc (0.0434 lb/in³), reflecting consistent mass-to-volume properties.
- Water Absorption: At 23°C/saturated (ISO 62), the material absorbs 0.35%, showing moderate moisture uptake under fully saturated conditions.
- Moisture Absorption at Equilibrium: Per ASTM D570, the equilibrium moisture absorption is 0.35%, suitable for assessing long-term humidity effects.
- Linear Mold Shrinkage, Flow:By SABIC method, for 3.20 mm (0.126 in) thickness, flow-direction shrinkage is 0.0050 – 0.0070 cm/cm (in/in).
- Melt Flow: ISO 1133 records 9.0 g/10 min at 300°C/1.20 kg, while ASTM D1238 shows 10.5 g/10 min under the same testing conditions.
Polymer Properties:
- Base Material: Polycarbonate (PC)
- Modification Features:
- Mid – flow rate enabling efficient injection molding.
- UV – stabilized to maintain properties under sunlight.
- Contains mold release for easy part removal from molds.
Applications:
Given these properties, LEXAN™ VR2220 is primarily used in the following applications:
- Medical Device Housings: Its resistance to cleaners makes it an ideal material for the durable housings of patient monitors, infusion pumps, blood glucose meters, and other hospital equipment.
- Connectors and Fluid-Handling Components: The resin is suitable for creating clear, robust connectors and fittings in IV systems, blood oxygenators, and fluid delivery devices.
- Surgical and Diagnostic Instrument Housings: It is used for housings and handles of instruments that require frequent cleaning and resistance to chemicals.
- Diagnostic Equipment: Its chemical resistance and clarity make it a preferred material for parts of laboratory and diagnostic equipment, such as centrifuges and analyzers.
