Glass fiber reinforced PP (Polypropylene) used for high-strength industrial applications

Glass modified polypropylene

Glass modified polypropylene is a high-performance composite material reinforced with glass fibers. This modification improves PP’s structural integrity while maintaining its lightweight nature. Glass modified PP is available in two primary types: long glass fiber polypropylene (LGFPP) and short glass fiber polypropylene (SGFPP).

  • Long glass fiber–reinforced PP (LGF PP) contains 10–50 mm continuous glass fibers that interlock throughout the matrix. This structure delivers excellent impact, creep and fatigue resistance, along with enhanced thermal stability. LGF PP is typically used in demanding structural applications such as automotive bumpers, dashboard supports and seat frames, as well as in industrial equipment and high‑performance sporting goods.
  • Short glass fiber–reinforced PP (SGF PP) incorporates uniformly dispersed glass fibers shorter than 1 mm. The fine dispersion boosts rigidity, mechanical strength and dimensional stability, while also simplifying processing. SGF PP finds common use in electrical housings, appliance components and precision‑molded industrial parts.

Both LGF PP and SGF PP offer improved thermal stability, exceptional impact performance, a lightweight yet strong structure, and serve as cost-effective alternatives to metal.

Glass Modified Polypropylene FAQs

What are the mechanical properties of Glass Modified Polypropylene
  • Tensile Strength: LGFPP typically has a tensile strength of 50-80 MPa, whereas SGFPP is around 30-60 MPa.

  • Flexural Modulus: LGFPP can reach a flexural modulus of 6,000-8,000 MPa, while SGFPP is about 3,500-5,000 MPa.

  • Impact Resistance: LGFPP has better impact resistance, with notched Izod impact values ranging from 5-10 kJ/m², while SGFPP values are typically around 3-6 kJ/m².

These mechanical properties make Glass Modified PP suitable for structural and high-performance applications.

Glass Modified PP is used in various industries:

  • Automotive: Structural components like bumpers, dashboards, and seat frames.

  • Electronics: Housings and components that require thermal stability and impact resistance.

  • Consumer Goods: Household appliances and molded parts that need enhanced rigidity.

  • Piping: For industrial pipes and fittings requiring strength and chemical resistance.

Glass Modified PP typically has a heat deflection temperature (HDT) of about 100-120°C for SGFPP and 130-150°C for LGFPP. This makes it suitable for applications exposed to moderate to high temperatures.

Glass Modified Polypropylene is highly resistant to a range of chemicals, including:

  • Acids: Good resistance to diluted acids like sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrochloric acid (HCl).

  • Bases: High resistance to alkalis such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

  • Solvents: Resistant to oils and most organic solvents, although some strong polar solvents can affect its properties.

Glass Modified PP has a UL 94 flammability rating of V-2 for SGFPP and V-0 for LGFPP, indicating it is self-extinguishing and exhibits low flame spread in case of fire. However, it’s not entirely flameproof and should be used with caution in applications where high fire resistance is critical.

  • Injection Molding Shrinkage: Typically around 0.5% to 1.5% for both LGFPP and SGFPP, depending on the fiber content and molding conditions.

  • Molding Temperature: Recommended injection molding temperatures are generally in the range of 200°C to 250°C for both types of Glass Modified PP.
